Enjoy the lush scenery around the Tambora Coffee-plantation and witness the harvesting during the months of July and August.
The northern slopes of Mount Tambora is the main coffe growing area in Sumbawa island, thus the coffee from this area is marketed as Tambora coffee. The intensive coffee plantation begun in colonial era after the area was cleared up because of the eruption of Tambora volcano in 1815.
However archaeological findings discover some coffee seeds suggesting the local Tambora and Pekat kingdoms already cultivated the seeds acquired from Dutch East Indies Company, growing and harvesting them to trade with.
Almost anyone, used to hiking, can ascend to the rim of the crater and be amazed by it’s size and depth. It will take you one whole day to ascend and you’ll need to hire a guide @ Rp150,000 per day. Porters will help you carry anything at the cost of Rp100,000 per day per porter.
Descending into the deepest crater in the world is not for those who are faint-hearted and it will take a full day from the rim down to the base of the crater.
Only few have traveled the treacherous way down and you’re obliged to hire an experienced local guide.

During your stay at the Tambora Guest-house you may want to do some exploring in the vicinity and camp nearby where you get the feeling of being absolutely alone. No human made noises or any other disturbances, pure tranquility!
Opposite of the well-known Satonda Island you will find Sofanda Beach near the village of Nangamiro.
You’ll need a local guide to take you there as it’s not as easy to find the path leading down to the beach.
An easier way is to hire a small motorized boat from Kenanga Beach to take you to Sofanda Beach and then straight on to Satonda Island.
Satonda Island with it’s crater-lake is of fascinating beauty and a must see.
Once a year, usually during the month of July, a team of archaeologists excavate the site where many people perished in the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora. Anyone interested to join the research, personal or professional can contact us to obtain an invitation from the Indonesian authorities.
